A Lap of Road Atlanta with Tom KristensenRoad Atlanta is one of the best tracks in the country. The rolling terrain and the red clay make for a beautiful layout in the Georgia countryside. Coming down the front straight in the Infineon Audi R8 you are doing nearly300 kph to get set up for turn one. Turn one is a fast corner that we will take in fifth gear. You turn in and then the corner drops down a little and you have to wait until the car compresses and nail it up the hill to turn two. Turn two has a blind entry. You have to commit yourself to the apex, brake hard and clip the curb a little in third gear. The car will struggle a little for traction and then accelerate on your way into the esses. Coming through three and into the esses,we will short shift to fifth gear. When you are on new tires you have a lot of grip and can carry a lot of speed through here.In traffic you have to be patient and be very committed to your overtaking without lifting,or you will have contact. The Audi will carry about 250 kph through this section. You come into five, the fast left hander,in fourth at about 160 kph.You compress and run up on the curb, but not too much, making sure not to damage the rear diffuser. You then head down the short straight to the next corner. This section is one of the most important on the track. These next two corners, six and seven, set you up for the long straight. The first one is taken in fourth with a quick blast on the accelerator, brake and then down to second.Turn seven is the slowest corner with very low grip. You have to be patient and aggressive to get the power down. You track out and let the curb catch you at the exit, then accelerate down the long straight reaching over 300 kph.You also have to be careful how you are following someone so you don't upset the aero of the car over the hump. The next section into10a is critical. You brake from over 300 km down to 110 in less than 100 meters for the chicane.Shifting into second through the chicane you can run up on the curbs at the entry and exit aggressively before you go over the hill. The hill is great!Coming over the hill is like a roller coaster ride.It is my favorite part of the circuit. You head for the right hand side of the road next to the bottom of the bridge. The speed you carry with the g-forces from the acceleration will deliver you to the track out point. From here to the entry of turn one we are flat out. At Road Atlanta we will shift the Audi R8 43 times per lap and average race lap times will be one minute and eleven seconds. Turn Gear Speed 1

For the 2002 season, Engine Developments is introducing a new variant of its highly successful 4 litre Sports Racing engine, the GV4. The new engine will have an increased capacity of 5 litres, and will be known as GV5.
The introduction of the new engine has been brought about by an examination of the various markets and series in which the 4 litre engine is currently used. Having studied these, we believe that a lower revving, higher torque engine may be better suited to some customers, and have opted for an increase to 5 litres to provide these characteristics.
Being a development of the GV4, the GV5 will share the same basic design as the 4 litre engine, but will have an increased stroke to achieve the higher capacity. This will result in a taller engine with slightly different installation requirements for gearbox mounting, airbox and exhaust systems. Otherwise the engine will remain largely similar to the existing 4 litre.
The maximum power of the GV5 will be similar to the 4 litre, but we expect maximum torque to be increased by 25 – 30% though this will be achieved at lower rpm than on the GV4. With maximum revs reduced from 11000 to 9000rpm, the potential long term reliability of the engine may be improved over the 4 litre variant, though the excellent reliability record of the 4 litre will be difficult to surpass.
Rebuild intervals for GV5 will initially be the same as GV4 (3000km), but it is hoped in the long term that these will be increased.
The first orders for the GV5 have already been accepted, with deliveries to customers expected to commence in January 2002. Engines will only be available on a 2 year lease contract, details of which are available from the company.
Any enquiries about the engine can be made through the EDL website, at this link.

"I am excited about being back with Aspen Knolls and MCR," said Lewis from the Florida shop of MCR. "I feel like I am back with family for the one of the biggest events of the year. Bob [Mazzuoccola, owner of Aspen Knolls Racing] and I have worked together for so long that it has been strange not being at the track with him. American Viperacing (AVR) gave me a great opportunity coming out of the leg surgery while the Callaway was on hiatus. I certainly appreciate the opportunity to help AVR develop their program."
The Callaway made its first North American appearance in the hands of Lewis at Sebring International Raceway in late February pre-season testing. As the lead-driver of the Aspen Knolls team, Lewis drove the C12's only two US appearances at the Texas Motor Speedway and the 12 Hours of Sebring.
Lewis, looking over the Goodyear tire-shod Callaway in the MCR shop, spoke with enthusiasm, "With the changes MCR has been making to this car we should have a good chance at the Petit Le Mans. Road Atlanta should play well into this car's horsepower and aerodynamic advantages. There is some steep competition with the BMWs and Porsches in the GT-class but if we can set a good strategy and follow it, we will surprise some people."
The #12 Aspen Knolls Callaway C12-R will be co-driven by Bob Mazzuoccola, of Staten Island, New York and Cort Wagner of Los Angeles, California in the GT-class. Lewis, who has scored points in both the ALMS GTS and GT classes in 2001, will test the MCR-revised C12-R at Road Atlanta on Sunday, September 30 in preparation for the season-ending endurance event.
The fourth annual Petit Le Mans will be shown live on Speedvision beginning at noon (EDT) on Saturday October 6. Practice for the new American racing classic begins on Wednesday, October 3 with qualifying on Friday, October 5th.

Pescarolo stiller
selvfølgeligt op på Le Mans i 2002.
Pescarolo har allerede deltaget i et FIASCC løb i år, og det forventes at der kommer en Courage C60 til løbet på Kyalami i november, som samtidig afslutter sæsonen. |
